Schmidt Warns of More Civil Disobedience in Raw Milk War

TODAY, Michael Schmidt issued a starting statement to government and court officials today in his legal battle over raw milk. This letter came to me through The Bovine, but today I learned that Michael Schmidt is now a member of the Wisconsin Alliance for Raw Milk, sponsored by the Journal and U.S Connections for Natural Food and Healing. He has become an influential leader in North America–an icon– in the battle for freedom to access to raw milk, needed for so many for their health . . . and also the freedom to share and trade the product by the dairies that produce it to their neighbors and friends. As usual his letter is brilliantly crafted, full of heart and confidence, bold. Speaking the truth to power here is Michael Schmidt’s letter:

Dear Friends in Government and those who work for the Government

From raw milk farmer Michael Schmidt.

I have a certain fascination with trying to read the human face behind the facade of those who enforce laws. My attempt to meet all of you on a personal level has nothing to do with hoping to convince you to treat me better or be more lenient towards me. Let’s be clear, I do want to be treated like anyone else, otherwise we would deal with yet another injustice.

Meeting you as equals in a worthwhile dispute requires utmost respect for each other.

Do I think you have more power than I?  No.  You should be limited because of your duty to make sure that you are not violating basic human rights when you enforce laws. If there is any hint that a law is violating basic human rights and you keep enforcing it, then you are no different than those who enforce laws in Iran, in North Korea or in any other country with a dictatorship. Are you familiar with the human rights we all have?

The danger we are facing here is much greater than the brutal dictatorships in other countries. The rules and regulations imposed on all of us by fear, misled politics through the corporate lobby and under the banner of freedom and democracy are far beyond the limitations set by the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.

It is worrisome if you enforce laws without the ever present awareness that nothing is more important for a truly just society than upholding ones freedom. The grave danger we are facing in Canada, is the illusion of being free and that we too willingly give up our freedom for the sake of a promised security. I agree if someone chooses to seek the protection of the state, he or she has to be prepared to give up rights. Many people are willing to do that without realizing that they have to live with the consequences of being ruled by someone else. We need to be concerned when the State takes it upon itself to impose limitations beyond its mandate without proper communication especially when the limitations of personal rights are the consequence.

I and many others never gave anyone the permission to decide for us what to eat, what to drink and how to live. Neither will we impose on you our beliefs.

I do respect your personal rights and responsibilities.

Please do understand that in the future I can not and will not anymore co-operate in any actions and proceedings, which are imposed on us IF you are violating our basic rights.

Yes this might spell trouble and hardship for me and others.

I have spent the last three years giving everyone involved the benefit of the doubt. I now have moved on.

We have the choice to resist with love and determination. We are ready to enter into a new chapter of civil disobedience. There are many of us and there will be more to come as we proceed.

We are, as always, open for a constructive dialogue

Regards,

Michael Schmidt

  1. French revolution was started by 11 disorgabized youths in a coffee bar in Paris and not by some politically motivated organized group.

It was a pleasure meeting you at the rally. I agree with you 100%. As I to am not going to sit by and co-operate any more in any actions and proceedings, which they imposed on us if they violate our basic rights. It is time to show our servants, they work for us.

    • Quite frankly, I think sometimes that you would be better off to just ignore them. Make them write or email you. Play the waiting game. Make them answer you in 30 or 60 days. Catch them in their own words. I could help write a play book on strategies (which would make a good joint project) but I would not follow an attorneys advice– not all the way anyway.

  3. Michael, I too was happy to meet you at the rally in Viroqua, WI. Thank you for the well put letter. There are many of us, and many more to come who will stand up for our rights. Thank you for supporting us in the US and in Wisconsin.

  4. Michael – It was indeed a pleasure to have dinner at the B&B and speak with you and hear your story! I agree 100% with your civil disobedience! WE CANNOT STAND BACK any longer and just let them railroad all over our personal property and CHOICE to consume what we deem is healthy for us to consume! BRAVO – KEEP UP THE FAITH and the FIGHT!
    much love

  5. We should all allow government to make all decisions for us. How can you even start to doubt this ?. It is called communism, I think, or socialists gone mad. The government is not working for you – it works against you. Wake up – keep them out of your life, as much as possible. Good luck in your fight.

  6. My husband, age 93 and I, age 84, have enjoyed the health benefits of raw organic goat milk for the past several years. Our supplier has ceased providing it, as she is terrified of government reaction. Even though we presently use organic cow’s milk, it pales by comparison to the goat milk.

We are with you in spirit, if not body, in your cause.

  7. Sounds a lot like Gandhi’s NONCOOPERATION. Just choose not to play. Not and easy road, but it has worked many places. (Of course, they tend to shoot the leaders of such movements…)

You, Michael, are a modern day Ghandi. Peaceful resistance has worked, does work, and will work. Truth wins every time.

  9. We the people, have so much power, and yet we will not stick together and use it. Do any of you realize that we could change this entire nation in a matter of days if we would only stand together? Every time these fools do something stupid and unconstitutional, if tens of thousands of us would take to the streets like they do in those 3rd world hell-holes, we would put the far of God into them. But, as of now, they have no fear because we only post complaints on the internet. The smoke from a well lite fire would change the mind of most any wayward pol.

  10. Yes, and yes about the milk. Oh God, would it be wonderful if it were not so much bigger. Raw milk is a symbol of parental, personal, basic human rights. If I cannot decide what is healthy for myself or my own child? Now it is not my child, I am a foster parent for the goverments children, raising them in the ways deemed appropriate. And THEN, what are we all? except the next generation of complacent governments brats? I expect a call from a case worker about this email…….
